Ernest Lawson, a Canadian-American painter, was known for his Impressionistic style of art. Primarily a painter of landscapes, Lawson, for most his career, painted impressionistic views of the narrow tidal channel between Manhattan and Bronx. Most of his subjects were based on his experiences in New England and New York. He was especially fond of the view along the rivers Hudson and Harlem of the highest peak of Manhattan. Born in 1873, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Lawson was more popular as a member of The Eight, a group of artists under leaders like Robert Henri, Everett Shinn, John Sloan, Arthur B. Davies, Maurice Prendergast, George Luks, and William J. Glackens.
